High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), Gulmarg, trains troops from Indian Army, Sister Services, Central Armed Police Forces and Friendly Foreign Countries in Mountain and Winter Warfare to undertake operations in Mountainous and High Altitude Area. It is one of the oldest training institutions of the Indian Army. This establishment undertakes training from three geographically separate locations.

 

The school boasts of a glorious history, since its inception. The school has executed various avalanche rescue operations in Super High Altitude areas successfully under challenging and adverse weather conditions. HAWS has contributed immensely towards military diplomacy by training trainees from Friendly Foreign Countries and participation in Joint Training Exercises being undertaken by Indian Army. HAWS is responsible for managing of Army Winter Games Node (AWGN) which is responsible for training Indian Army Winter Games Athletes. The node has produced many winter games athleteswho have represented country in various National and International Winter Games including Winter Olympics.

 

The School trains more than 1,400 personnel annually and some of its alumni have excelled in operations, mountaineering and winter games. More than 16 countries have been sending their personnel for training. The School today stands as the most decorated training establishment of Indian Army.  It has the proud distinction of being awarded three General Officer Commanding-in-ChiefUnit appreciations.
