To overcome deficiency due to the wastage rate and requirements of new raisings, an idea to establish a second Artillery Centre was mooted by Major General KP Candeth, the then Director General of Artillery, in March 1961. Sanction was accorded by the Government of India in June 1961.  Artillery Centre, Hyderabad, the alma mater of the ‘Deg Andaz’/ Topchi came into being on 15 August 1962 within the Golconda Fort famed for its historical Guns & Cannons, in particular, the fearsome ‘Azdah Paikar’ literal translation ‘Dragon Body’ a superb piece of composite artillery skilfully engineered, manufactured and used by Aurangzeb in the siege of the Golconda Fort in 1687.

 

Today, the mighty cannon might be silent but its roar and crashing thunder is reverberated in all corners of this ‘Centre of Excellence’ as it metamorphoses Young Recruits into highly trained soldiers ready to tread the immortal path of glory, pledging unflinching service to the nation. This magnificent Centre has come a long way from its formative years when it welcomed its first batch of 59 recruits in October. The Centre spread over an area of more than 1,900 acres with spacious training areas, living accommodation, State of Art Firing Range, Stadium with Synthetic Track one of its kind international standard Swimming Pool, one of the biggest Drill Square and Sports Infrastructure.
