Ordnance Club

Ordnance Club  at  Hastings, Kolkata is  one of the oldest  and  prestigious  sports Clubs  in  Kolkata. This  is  a proprietary  Institution  owned  and  managed  by Ordnance Services  Officers  Welfare Society  (OSOWS) and  hence the  name Ordnance Club. It  is  believed  that  consequent  to  the formation  of Board  of Ordnance on  08  April, 1775, some sort  of a recreational  centre for troops  was created in  the Hastings  area in  Kolkata  which  was  manned  and  managed  by Ordnance Personnel and Officers. The genesis of the Ordnance Club dates as far back as, this recreational center. The membership and permission to use the Club till 1947 was restricted to Indian Army Officers and troops. With independence, to enhance the interaction  between  Army  and  Civilians, the  Club  opened  its membership  to  limited  civilians  also. At  present  all  officers  of Army  Ordnance Corps (AOC) both serving and retired are Life Members which now number more than  2500. In  addition, Defence Service and  senior Central  and  State  Govt. Officers  in  Kolkata  are also  granted  station  based  and  tenure based  Service membership.   Ordnance Club  primarily  is  a Sports  Club  with  facilities  for Badminton, Billiards, Snooker, Squash, Tennis, Swimming, Table Tennis  and Chess. The Club has got one of the best covered and wooden floored badminton court  with  maximum  roof clearance in  Kolkata. The Club  has  renovated  all sporting  facilities  recently  and  conducted  a series  of success-full  State Ranking tournaments  in  the past. We also  conduct  excellent  social  and  entertainment programmes and events. Ordnance Club still retains the old world charm in many ways. The Club Main building, the wooden floored ball room, the spacious lawn and  the  entire  establishment  definitely  gives  the impression  of an  excellent Heritage Army  Club  with  the emphasis  on  discipline, sports  and  quality entertainment.
