For the Indian Army with its background of over two hundred years wherein there was no thought ever of mixing different classes within an infantry unit, this was indeed a bold experiment, and as such, it was watched carefully not only by the Army but by the Government and the Nation.  The question uppermost in everyone’s mind was whether this would promote national integration, and whether the men thus bound, fight with the same zeal as they did in the name of their class.
