During the Kargil War in May 1999, the students of Mumbai University led by the Vice Chancellor Mrs Snehlata Deshmukh, in an admirable gesture of solidarity formed a human chain around the University Campus up to MG & G Area Headquarters in Colaba to offer their services to the Nation and the Army. Having felt the need to take collective, positive, well directed and timely action to provide relief for the wards of Army personnel killed / disabled in action, the idea of constructing the AWWA Diamond Hostel was born and 40,000 square feet of land at the Vidyanagari Campus, Kalina (Mumbai) was allotted for this purpose. Diamond Hosted has a reception, dining area, lounge, 50 rooms and a large dormitory. It is exclusively for wards of defence personnel.
