1.     Introduction. The College of Materials Management (CMM) is a premier training establishment of the Indian Army which specialises in studies and research in the field of Logistics & Supply Chain Management. Established as a professional training establishment in Oct 1925 at Poona, it moved to Jabalpur in 1930.

2.     Programs offered. The following programme are being offered by this College :-

a.     03 Post Graduate Degree Courses.

b.     03 Post Graduate Diploma Courses.

c.     15 Upgrading Diploma Courses.

d.     03 Post Graduate Certificate Courses.

e.     22 Upgrading Certificate Courses.

3.     Role. The Role of CMM is to impart quality training to all ranks of AOC, including civilians and selected persons of all Arms and Services, enabling them to discharge material management duties, efficiently at different levels, war and peace.

4.     Charter of Duties. CMM is an academic centre which imparts training on all facets of Logistics & Supply chain Management including inventory of items, encompassing various disciplines viz Munitions Armament, Combat Vehicles, Aviation, Radio, Electronics, Optics, Opto Electronics and items of General Stores & Clothing. It also provided learning in Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Supply Chain Management and Logistics to the under mentioned categories persons:-

a.     All AOC Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) Other Ranks (OR), Recruits and Civilians.

b.     All Arms and Service Officers, JCOs and NCOs in Quarter Master Duties. (Materials Management at combat unit level).

c.     Store Keepers of all Arms and Services.

d.     Officers and other ranks of 21 friendly foreign countries.

e.     Selected Officers of sister services i.e. Air Force, Navy, Para Military Forces and State Organisations.”

f.     Additional Responsibility. The college is also having a distance learning programme for MBA for Defence Personnel and Civilians.

6.     Vision. “To develop Army Ordnance Corps Personals into ERP enabled, effective and efficient materials managers for the Indian Army”.

7.     Mission. “To train Materials Managers to address future Logistics challenges and to deliver effective and efficient logistics support to the Indian Army in an ERP environment.”

8.     Training Philosophy. The College takes into account the environmental aspirations and requirements. Accordingly, terminal behaviour of students for each course is formulated. Syllabi and methods of instruction are then chosen to achieve the expected terminal behaviour. Instructions are aimed at bringing about attitudinal change, knowledge acquisition, enhancing problem solving skills and improving interpersonal skills.

9.     Training Activities. The training at the College of Materials Management varies from basic education of recruits in Materials Management duties to post graduate levels. On an average, as many as 1800 Officers, 10800 personnel below Officers Rank are trained. This also includes limited number of personnel from Friendly Foreign Countries, Para Military Forces and Sister Services i.e. Air Force and Navy and 100 defence personal including their wards and Civilians are trained annually in different disciplines of management. The faculties involved in education are :-

(a)     Faculty of Higher Ordnance Management.

(b)     Faculty of Munitions Technology.

(c)     Faculty of Combat Equipments.

(d)     Faculty of Ordnance Logistic Support.

(e)     Faculty of Computer Technology.

(f)     Recruit Training Wing.

10.     Other Activities. The College of Materials Management besides conducting various programmes for its different client employers, have also been entrusted to perform additional duty of conducting three years Master Degree in Business Administration through Distance Learning Programme, in Marketing, Financial Management, Human Resources Management. (Vacancy of 100 Students) in the interest of the organization and the society.

11.     Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The college has established a MoU with Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Management (IIITDM) Jabalpur to encourage cooperation, promote excellence in education, research and knowledge development for national and global well being.

12.     Advisory. Being a training institution that is intimately associated with a dynamic discipline like ‘Materials Management’. College of Materials Management plays an advisory role for all its client employers in the following fields:-

(a)     Emerging Management Concepts and Philosophies.

(b)     Clarification/Modification of Various Director General of Ordnance Services Technical Instructions, in vogue, in the Army.

(c)     Formulation of New Director General of Ordnance Services Technical Instructions.

(d)     Materials Management Functions.

(e)     Amendments to various functional processes, dealing with various material management activities at various echelons.

(f)     Trouble-Shooting on various contemporary problems being faced by various ordnance echelons.

13.     Projects and Organisational Improvements.

(a)     Printing of Materials Manager - The Professional Journal of AOC. CMM being a Defence institution, the teachers and students are permitted to publish their work in specific journal only. They are not permitted to send papers abroad or outside being restricted in nature. The College publishes a bi-annual journal titled ‘Materials Manager’. It is distributed to large number of institutions in the country and to the various defence units. The college has also published some pamphlets and books related to Management studies.

(b)     Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs) Training. A number of courses conducted at this College are being subscribed by friendly foreign countries. This association, besides providing platform for attaining knowledge on functioning of each other Armed forces, also serves to foster healthy relationship between countries & helps strengthen long term national interests. 

(c)     Department of Armament Technology (DOAT). A new complex has been recently constructed in the modernisation project of COD Jabalpur and classed are being conducted in the new DOAT Complex.

(d)     Computer Based Training. These packages are used in simulating, exhibiting and explaining the complex design and functioning of armament munitions and functional processes.

(e)     Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs). Faculty Development Program are conducted on weekly basis in every Faculty. Central FDPs are held regularly at least twice a month.

(f)     Seminars, Webinars & Guest Lectures. A number of seminars, webinars and guest lectures are conducted by the visiting faculties of IIMs (Lucknow, Bangalore, Indore), XLRI Jamshedpur to supplement the ongoing training and to imbibe the latest concepts in the field of Supply Chain Management. We undertake exchange visits with Military Engineering, Pune. Military College of Telecommunication Engineering Mhow, Military College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Secunderabad, DRDL Hyderabad, PXE Balasore.

14.     Design Capacity. College of Materials Management is designed to train 150 Officers, 900 Personnel Below Officer Rank and in addition 100 civilians. (Total 1200 trainees at any given point of time).

15.     Teaching Faculty. Apart from the posted instructors the strength of teaching faculty of the college is civilians Professors/Lecturers from Rani Durgawati Vishwavidyalaya and also from IIITDM under the MoU. All the professors are Ph.D qualified. They are actively guiding, teaching and mentoring the senior courses within the institute premises.
