Role

The role of the Infantry School is to impart training in Infantry Tactics, Weapons, Equipment and Information Technology (IT). As a corollary to the aim, The Infantry School also develops related doctrines, techniques and battle drills to enable Infantry officers, JCOs and OR to function effectively as part of a unit or sub unit in all operations of war, and to conduct trials of infantry related equipment and weapon systems. 

The tasks of the Infantry School are varied. At the foremost, it is to conduct courses of instruction, as ordered by the Army Training Command. Next is to develop new tactical doctrines, battle techniques and battle drill pertaining to infantry. It also keeps abreast with the current evolving and futuristic technological and tactical developments in India and abroad.

It also includes the study and evaluation of latest trends in development of infantry tactics, weapons ammunition and equipment. That apart, it is required to conduct the National Combat Forces Shooting and Young Blood Championships and to carry out trials of weapons, equipment and ammunition pertaining to infantry.  

Its other tasks include the preparation of training pamphlets for all arms pertaining to weapons and field craft, conduct seminars/studies related to management and technology on behalf of Army Headquarters/ Army Training Command and assist Army Marksmanship Unit in precision shooting and realizing the ‘Olympic Dream’.
 

Training

The planning and conduct of all the courses of instructions is the responsibility of the training wings, viz the Young Officers’ Wing and the Weapons and Trials Wing at Mhow, the Junior Leaders’ Wing at Belgaum and the Non Commissioned Officers’ Academy at Binaguri.  

In order to run these courses, qualified Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Non Commissioned Officers are posted to various Divisions as instructors on a tenure basis. These instructors are highly qualified, having secured an ‘Instructor’ grading in the respective course before being posted to that very course. That apart, they are thoroughly motivated, hand picked and meet all the qualitative requirements of a competent instructor.  

A Colonel commands each Division. In order to assist him to coordinate and conduct various courses is a Group Commander of the ranks of a Lieutenant Colonel. Officer Instructors are of the rank of Major or Captain and squad post classes are conducted by Non Commissioned Officers, usually Havildar Instructors, under the direct supervision of Officers or Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs). Officers and JCOs also conduct selected classes/ impart lectures from time to time, apart from conducting numerous outdoor exercises, to include firing. However, the Tactics Leg of the Young Officers’ Course is conducted entirely by officers who are also the Directing Staff. 

To assist in conduct of various demonstrations, field firing and outdoor training activities, an Infantry Demonstration (Demo) Battalion and a Mechanised Infantry Company are also structured into the organization of The Infantry School, Mhow.
