After the 1965 Indo-Pak War, the Indian Army sought to provide greater mobility for Infantry units operating with armour formations. By 1969, some of the most senior battalions of various existing Regiments were equipped with Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) TOPAZ, SKOT and BTR-60. These battalions remained affiliated with their parent Regiments and Regimental Centres. In 1977-1978, some Mechanised Infantry units began to be equipped with BMP-1 Infantry Combat Vehicle (ICVs). In the late 70s, General KV Krishna Rao, then Deputy Chief of the Army Staff, picked General Krishnaswamy Sundarji to be part of a small team to study the reorganisation and modernisation of the Army. This led to the creation of ‘machine-rich’ divisions that became the mainstay of the India Army.
The home of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment, earlier designated as ‘Mechanised Infantry Regimental Centre (MIRC)’ was raised on 02 Apr 1979 at Ahmednagar. Centre has now been re-designated as Mechanised Infantry Centre and School (MIC&S) wef 17 Nov 2021.
Government approval for raising Mechanised Infantry Regiment (MIR) & Mechanised Infantry Regiment Centre (MIRC) was accorded in Mar 1979. A total of 2179 acres land was acquired at Ahmednagar. MIRC was raised by late Brig M K Menon, AVSM, the first Centre Commandant. Meticulous planning, keen eye for detail and foresight along with zealous execution resulted in the creation of one of the finest Regimental Centres of the Indian Army.
