
The ASHOKA CHAKRA award for gallantry was instituted by the President of India on 04 Jan 1952 in three categories, namely, Class One, Class Two and Class Three.
On 27 January 1967 the three categories were renamed as ASHOKA CHAKRA, KIRTI CHAKRA and SHAURYA CHAKRA respectively.
For Most conspicuous bravery, or some act of daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice otherwise than in the face of the enemy. The decoration may also be awarded posthumously.

During OP BLUE STAR, Lt Ram Prakash Roperia led his company on 05/06 Jun 1984, with exceptional deftness, physical courage and utter disregard for his personal safety against heavily armed extremists, thereby, setting a personal example for his troops. His courage and leadership inspired his men to press on the attack even after he succumbed to his injuries. For this act of most conspicuous gallantry, leadership and exceptional devotion to duty, Lt Ram Prakash Roperia was awarded the highest gallantry award in peace ‘Ashoka Chakra’ posthumously.
