Maha Vir Chakra

The Maha Vir Chakra, the Nation's second highest gallantry award was instituted by the President of India on 26 Jan 1950 for "ACTS OF GALLANTRY IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ENEMY ON LAND, AT SEA OR IN THE AIR".

Nk Raju
The First "Maha Vir Chakra" of the Regiment

During the J & K Operations, on 11 Jun 1948, Tithwal Post was captured and while defending the post, the enemy, approximately three hundred in strength, attacked the post. During the attack, Nk Raju, Section Commander of one of the Companies, though severely wounded, kept the enemy engaged with his section. In this action, he showed courage and set an example of leadership and devotion to duty in the very finest traditions of the service, and was thus awarded the First Maha Vir Chakra.


Lt Col Harbans Lal Mehta

During the Operations in Sialkot Sector on 08 Sep 1965, Lt Col Harbans Lal Mehta was commanding his Battalion in an attack. Unmindful of his own safety, he exhibited rare courage and personally led the assault. Despite being wounded in the battle, he kept inspiring his men and provided leadership and directions at crucial moment of battle for which he was awarded Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.


Lt Col Ved Prakash Ghai

During the battle of Basantar River on 15 Dec 1971, Lt Col Ved Prakash Ghai was commanding his Battalion. During the battle, he moved fearlessly from one position to another with utter disregard to his personal safety, directing and encouraging his men, with which the battalion repulsed the enemy attacks. During the battle, he was severely wounded and made the supreme sacrifice on the battle field. Lt Col Ved Prakash Ghai was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.


Capt SS Walkar

During Indo-Pak war, on 16 Dec 1971, at Hingoro Tar (Pakistan), Capt SS Walkar, with his conspicuous bravery, inspiring leadership and exemplary devotion to duty, went to each company to tie up defensive fire tasks and, for having fought bravely and having laid down his life heroically in the highest traditions of ‘Service before self’, Captain SS Walkar was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.


Hav (Late Sub Maj & Hony Capt) Philipose Thomas

During the battle of Basantar River on 15/16 Dec 1971, Hav Thomas Philipose was a Platoon Havildar of a company. During the action, his platoon commander was severely wounded and the company could not proceed further. Hav Thomas took charge of the platoon and displayed resolute leadership under adverse conditions and set a brilliant example of courage and bravery of an exceptionally high order and was thus awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.
