MGS BRANCH

HISTORY

1.     The post of MGO existed since 1884. In the early 1940s the Master General of Ordnance Branch consisted of five Directorates (Staff Def, Armt Dte, Mech Dte, Salvage Dte and Dte of Ordnance Services) and Controller General of Inspection. The MGO in those days performed the tasks of Secy (DP), Addl Secy (DS), CCR & D, DG I and DG WE. After WW-II, a general plan for re-organisation of Army HQ was worked out.

2.     In accordance with the plan, the constituent Dtes of the MGO Branch were gradually transferred to QMG’s Branch & GS Branch. The Dte of Ordnance Services was transferred to QMG’s and Dtes of Mech Engg & Technical Development to GS Branch. MGO’s appointment was deleted from 1947 to 1949. In 1960, WE Dte was placed under the MGO but reverted back to Gen Staff in 1963. In 1965, the Armed Forces Re-org Committee created the Department of Defence Production and de-linked Armt and Mech Dte and Controller General of Inspection from the MGO, to create a Dte of Tech Development (which later converted into DGQA Organisation).
