HISTORY OF MARATHA SPHURTI GEET

In 1967, Col NPP Thorat, Central Commandant, MLIRC met the renowned musician and singer Sri Sudhir Phadke and requested him to compose a song for the regiment. Shri Sudhir Phadke immediately sent a telegram to Shri Suresh Bhat requesting him to write the lyrics for the song. Shree Bhat was a noted Marathi poet from Maharashtra.

Shri Suresh Bhat camped at Mumbai for ten days and completed the song which he called ‘Koochgeet’ (meaning marching song). Shree Phadke asked shree Bhat to write the lyrics to suit foxtrot rhythm. Since the lyrics were written to suit the marching rhythm, the final song become very motivating for all ranks first recording of this song was done at the Maratha house at Belgaum. Later it was re-recorded in a studio at Mumbai.

The song was officially introduced as regimental song in ‘1967’, the lyrics of which highlight the valour of the soldiers of Chhatrapati Shivaji. 

Initial line of the song describes how the enemy gets terrified at the sight of brave Marathas when they join battle to safeguard the honour and integrity of their country.

The last stanza describe how the Marathas respect their country like their god and keep their land sacred by their sacrifices. They do not mind sacrificing their life for their countries because they know that the tales of their valour will be remembered forever. Drawing inspiration from the song, officers and men of the regiment have displayed bravery in various wars, counter insurgency and counter terrorist operations and have won numerous gallantry awards for the regiment.
