The RIA Centre South, was moved from Pollachi to Nasik Road soon after partition under Colonel TWM Johnson. On 07th April 1948, the erstwhile Mountain Artillery Training Centre (RIA North) was amalgamated with RIA Centre South, to form the Royal Indian Artillery Training Centre, Deolali North. Thus this date was adopted as the 'Raising Day' of the Centre in its present location. Due to the heavy intake of recruits required for the new raisings and the operations in Jammu & Kashmir, the peace establishment of the Centre was also revised with effect from 14 Jul 1948.
The Centre was accommodated in temporary pre war Nissan huts and barracks of the erstwhile transit area for British troops, a state which would remain till 1957. Areas for the Drill Square and the Weapon Training (WT) ground were developed and cleared. Plantation and landscaping of the area was also initiated despite water shortages. The training period of recruits varied depending upon whether they were being trained as gunners or drivers. Further the period of training of gunners depended on the type of equipment for which they were destined.
On an average the training period was about six months before recruits were drafted to newly raised units. Colonel TWM Johnosn, relinquished his appointment in February 1949 after 31 years in India and the first Indian Commandant Colonel KK Bhandari assumed command.
