The ancestral units of the Punjab Regiment were formed out of the erstwhile Coast Sepoys, which were later known as Carnatic Bns and then Madras Bns. The first five bns were raised between 1761 and 1798. These bns later came to be known as the 2nd PUNJAB Regt. In recognition of the efforts of the bns of the Regt to undertake sea voyages despite religious taboos, the Regt was awarded the badge of `Galley’ with motto `Khuski Wa Tari’ in 1922. Later, this motto was rechristened as `Sthal Wa Jal’ in 1967. Designation of these bns underwent many changes from time to time. After re-org of the Indian Army in 1903, these bns were redesignated as the 67th, 69th, 72nd, 74th and 87th Punjabis. In 1915, one more bn was raised at loralai and grouped with 67th Punjabis. As a result of reorg carried out in 1922, the bns were renumbered as 1/2nd , 2/2nd, 3/2nd, 4/2nd, 5/2nd while 10/2nd PUNJAB was converted into the Training Battalion and shifted to Multan.
