SPORTS AND ADVENTURE

Dhyan Chand Stadium

Dhyan Chand, the pride of Punjab Regiment, was a player of outstanding excellence, tremendous stamina, agility and such an original style of playing hockey that many world players tried to emulate him, but with little success. It was this unique style of Dhyan Chand that earned him, quite rightfully, the affectionate and most apporipriate title of `The Hockey Wizard’.

Dhyan Chand was still an ordinary sepoy of the British Indian Army when he took part in the 1936 Olympic hockey matches played at Berlin. India once again won the gold medal there, and out of the total of 38 goals scored by India, 11 goals come from the stick of Dhyan Chand.

In 1947, when India won freedom, Dhyan Chand (who had by then risen to Captain’s rank) was transferred to the 2nd Punjab Regimental Centre at Meerut from 1/14 Punjab Regiment and soon after he was promoted to a Major. He was also awarded Padma Bhushan in recognition of his services to hockey.

The PUNJAB Regt has procuded many outstanding sportsmen over the years, with hockey wizard Dhyan Chand topping the list.

In the field of athletics this Regiment’s notable international gold medalists include three famous sportsmen, namely Sub Harnek Singh, Sub Sardara Singh (both Arjuna Awardees as well) and Subedar Major Parsa Singh (Javelin). These three are from 14 PUNJAB (NABHA AKAL). 9 PUNJAB’s Sub Satish Kumar is another legend.

18 PUNJAB, too, produced famous athletes such as Hav Sarup Singh and Sub Sardul Singh, while 3 and 13 PUNJAB produced Nb Sub Avtar Singh and Nb Sub Gurdev Singh respectively. Sub Swaran Singh of 24 PUNJAB also showed tremendous potential, as did many others. It will not be possible to cover the achievements of each and every sportsman individually, but suffice to say that the Regiment is earning many more laurels by the year.
